Frequently Asked Questions

A1: How will I be taught grappling ?
First and foremost you will be taught “hands on” whether it be takedowns or groundwork. After being shown the technique you will always work with a partner, there is no wasted movement practicing against thin air. Working with a partner you get instant feedback, you ask your partner if something worked they answer yes or no. Nothing left to chance, nothing theoretical.

A2: Which classes are for beginners?
Grappling for personal development, all classes focus on working with, not against your partner, because of this, a rank beginner can work with more experienced grapplers and both will gain from the practice.

A3: Do you spar in class?
Yes. You won’t just be thrown in at the deep end. Without sparring you will never fully develop the confidence to pull off the techniques when it counts. If you can’t do it in training, you will never be able to do it anywhere.

A4: What do I wear?
If you are coming for the first few lessons please wear a sweatshirt and joggers. Once you are happy to carry on you you may wish to purchase grappling clothing, your coach can guide you.

A5: Do you need to be in shape to join?
NO you do not! Coaches will pride themselves on getting our members in shape; don’t wait to get in shape if you are interested in the grapplings. It is never too late to start learning grappling . The training environment should be friendly and motivating so you can learn at your own pace.

A6: How safe is Grappling training?
Training in grappling is one of the safest physical pursuits, if they are taught correctly and with an eye for safety. Recklessness in any sport is dangerous. Learning grappling while punishing your body is counter- productive. The goal of the coach should be to help you lead a safer, healthier, more relaxing lifestyle, in and out of the training area.

A7: How long does it take to become good at grappling?
It depends on what you mean by 'good.' You will be a little better every time you finish class. A student who attends class regularly (twice a week), works hard, and puts in at least a minimal amount of practice outside of the training area can expect to see results quickly.

A8: How much time does grappling training require?
It's really up to you. Everything that draws people to an activity requires a great deal of practice to achieve. To have lasting success, you need to reserve a corner of your life to training. However it need not be a large corner. We recommend at least 2 classes per week , however there are a few students on 1 class per week programme, It all depends on the individual.

A9: Is it all physical training or do you do mental training too?
The 2 are inseparable. When you train hard you are working your mind as well as your body. Training and sparring will increase your confidence in your abilities; the increase in confidence will aid you in becoming a stronger person. This in itself will give you the confidence to face difficult things in life and to walk away from trouble when you can, as you know in yourself that you have nothing to prove. This is the real mental training.

A10: How do you handle ranking?
Ranking system is currently being worked on based on FILA guidelines .We will use a ranking system. For us, ranking serves two purposes. First it provides a short-term goal, and a progress report on your education. Secondly, it allows the coach to organise the class. Testing is an evaluation of your understanding and abilities before moving on. If the student's understanding is sufficient, it is time to move on to new techniques. If not, then a student needs more time to perfect his or her skills.

A11: What if I have a chronic illness, injury or physical challenge or disability?
Our question to you is "How do you want to live your life?" If you want to maximize the quality of your life and embrace your abilities to the fullest, then all you need to do is start training. All of our programmes can be practiced by anyone, regardless of challenges. We are glad to liase with your health care providers to design the best programme to help you enjoy your life and meet your goals.

A12: I want my children to develop self-confidence, can this programme help?
Absolutely. The effect of grappling arts on self-confidence for children is well documented.
